Transmission Project/Digital Arts Service Corps

Location:
Boston, MA

The Transmission Project amplifies the power of public media and technology.

Our vision is a robust and diverse media ecology enabling a world built upon the full participation of society.

For nearly ten years, we have worked to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations that use media and technology to strengthen communities. The Transmission Project fulfills its mission by supporting a diverse network of partner organizations that provide services to benefit communities nationwide.

Our primary initiative is the Digital Arts Service Corps. The Transmission Project builds the strength and community impact of partner organizations such as low-power radio stations, media arts centers, rural broadband initiatives, and media reform policy advocates by supporting specific capacity-building projects through the recruitment and placement of a full-time, on-site AmeriCorps*vista member.

Supported Projects

VISTA Leader East

Billy Brown
9/20109/2011

The VISTA Leader East will ensure that all east coast, nationally placed Digital Arts Service Corps members are informed, motivated and connected to each other and the broader public media field. The VISTA will also assist in the redesign and development of a new Digital Arts Service Corps website and Transmission Project website, create data visualization for graphics demonstrating the Transmission Project’s 10 year history, and design swag and other promotional materials.

Research and Writing

Howard Fisher
9/20107/2011

Howie’s role is to evaluate the collaborative relationships between the Transmission Project, its Service Corps members, and its partner organizations. To this end, he delves into the Transmission Project’s past in order to build on our 10 year history of collaborative capacity building. With an eye to the Project’s future, he also conducts research on trends in the public media field.

Howard has been an amazing resource to the Transmission Project during his year of service. Howard has enabled the Transmission Project to make sense of its 10 years of history, including: putting all of our 400+ projects online in a searchable database; collecting stories and statistics about the impact of our projects; identifying and describing best (and worst) practices in public media and technology. In this latter role, Howard has published numerous articles and whitepapers on diverse topics: social media, donor databases, fundraising, project management, and national service. In these tasks, Howard is an active agent in reaching out to interview fellow VISTAs, organizational partners and other leaders in the field; he has strengthened the Transmission Project’s relationship to other nonprofit and public media organizations.

VISTA Leader

Jules Goins
7/2008

Jules has been a superb VISTA Leader during his past year with the Transmission Project. Jules is innovative and he engages outside knowledge and experts to solve problems and bring in more diverse viewpoints and experience.

In his role as VISTA Leader, Jules managed an effective team of 26 VISTA members: he has encouraged group cooperation and participation and has consistently facilitated effective resource and knowledge sharing. During the year, he has moderated conference calls and worked one-on-one with VISTA members to ensure that their service is meaningful and effective. He has greatly expanded our library of IVSTA-created resources and has acted as an effective resource-librarian when members have voiced needs or challenges.

Beyond his VISTA Leader responsibilities, Jules has accepted broad responsibility for helping to build the capacity of the CTC VISTA Project. In this role, he took the lead in further developing our training and member development curriculum. In addition to the 12-part training series he designed and oversaw, he sought out 5 external trainers and facilitators to deliver training, Jules has been instrumental in enlarging the knowledge an ability of our VISTA members and will be leaving behind him a solid training foundation upon which to build for future years.

Jules has brought great skills, experience and understanding to the Transmission Project. We have greatly benefited by his service.
